SUMMARY:Emerging Data on Preventing Gender-Based Violence
DESCRIPTION:Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC and Southwest PA Says NO MORE present MAKING RESEARCH RELEVANT: RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS DIALOGUE ABOUT EMERGING DATA ON GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE. \nThe field of prevention is continuing to evolve. Practitioners are in the field every day\, working to shift attitudes and behaviors to prevent the perpetration of abuse and to increase bystander intervention\, but are often navigating by instinct and anecdotal feedback. In southwest PA\, we are fortunate that Children’s Hospital of UPMC is conducting multiple research studies related to the prevention of sexual harassment\, assault and relationship abuse. The CHP Adolescent Medicine research team will present preliminary\, unpublished findings from ongoing studies and seek input from practitioners to make meaning of the data. This workshop is a unique opportunity for researchers and practitioners to come together and dialogue about what is working\, what is not\, and how these findings can shape ongoing prevention efforts. \nThis session is designed for professionals engaged in efforts to break cycles of violence and prevent adolescent relationship abuse\, sexual assault and domestic violence. Because the research findings to be presented are unpublished\, all attendees will be required to sign a confidentiality and non-disclosure statement. SUMMARY:From Starbucks to Startup- Applying Corporate Skills to Entrepreneurship
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, November 09 \nFrom Starbucks to Startup- Applying Corporate Skills to Entrepreneurship \n8-9:30am \nChatham University Shadyside Campus\, James Laughlin Music Center \nSandra E. Taylor\, CEO of Sustainable Business International LLC and Falk Professor of Socially Responsible Business at Chatham University\, will discuss how corporate experience can be a tremendous asset when launching a new business – deep expertise in a specific field\, knowing how to manage teams\, good presentation skills and familiarity with strategic planning — long and short-term—and knowing how to drive change as an “intrapreneur” in a large organization. However\, making the transition from corporate executive to entrepreneur also requires very different competences to survive and prosper in a small start-up where you don’t have the resources available in a corporate environment. The entrepreneur must learn new skills – and quickly — to be successful. She will share her own story — mistakes to avoid\, advice for marketing and client development\, as well as the importance of building a brand or re-branding yourself in this new role. \n► Register online only at http://www.chatham.edu/cwe/networking/breakfastseries/ \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Convivium Gathering: Terra Incognita\, a Literary Conference and Workshop
DESCRIPTION:There is a point of arrival but no way – Kafka \nIt is undeniable that there is an “unknown” (the geographers of ancient times traced the outline of what amounts to an analogue of this unknown with the famous expression terra incognita that marked the edge of their great sheet – along the margins of the sheet they wrote terra incognita\, “unknown land”). At the edge of reality that the eye embraces\, the heart feels\, and the mind imagines\, there is an unknown. Everyone feels it. Everyone has always felt it. Throughout the ages\, humans have felt it so strongly that they have also imagined it. In every age humans have sought\, through their ponderings or fantasies\, to imagine\, to fix the face of this unknown. In his Germania\, Tacitus described the religious feeling that distinguished the ancient Teutons thus: secretum illud quod sola reverentia vident\, hoc deum appellant” (that mysterious thing which they intuited with fear and trembling\, this they called God). – Luigi Giussani \nTo explore the unknown is to encounter monsters\, to be afraid\, to be lost\, to be heartbroken. It can mean a shattering of everything one had held dear. But it can also be revelation\, the epiphany of being\, the encounter with that which pulls everything else together and makes sense of it. \nIn “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner\,” the strange old man is compelled to tell his story\, his account of the visions and tribulations on a “wild\, wild sea.” He has to find a listener\, so he stops the wedding guest on the way to the feast\, and the listener in turn is compelled to hear. This is the power of the stories from the unknown. They must be told. We must listen. So artists and storytellers are forever inconveniencing us\, breaking in on our ordinary lives\, telling stories that shake our foundations. \nOur literary gathering is dedicated to exploring this terrain of the unknown\, as it has been indicated and mapped out through literature and the arts\, with a particular focus on “that mysterious thing.” The presence of the divine in the undiscovered countries\, the terra incognita\, will rarely be what one expected to find\, or where one hoped to find it. The word one hears may not be what one planned to hear\, or was prepared to hear\, yet in some way it must have been what you were longing to hear. Otherwise\, you could not have heard it. \nWe will gather as writers\, scholars\, and readers to discuss the ways in which art has approached the unknown lands\, and brought back word of the “mysterious thing.” \nAt the Gathering \nOur main keynote speaker for Convivium Gathering is award-winning novelist Mary Doria Russell. \nOther keynote speakers and presenters include poet Ewa Chrusciel\, novelist Suzanne Wolfe\, teacher Justin O’Connor\, and poet Ryan Wilson. \nTopics addressed by presenters and panelists will include aging\, the terra incognita within\, disability in literature\, genre fiction as political\, women writers who go “outside the bounds\,” literary protest\, the body as terrain\, and the role of mythology in art and music. \nPittsburgh\, \nCathedral of Learning \n4200 Fifth St. \nPittsburgh\, PA 15260 \nFree Workshop for Participants \nOpening the Door\, a writing workshop with novelist Rosalie Morales Kearns will be included in the conference package\, though with limited availability\, so sign up quickly! The event is free\, but only available to Convivium Gathering registrants\, so after you register for this event you will be directed to a confirmation page which will give you the password needed to register for Opening the Door. An email with the password will also be sent to you.
